Burnout Paradise Gets Bikes Next Week

Free "Davis" update arriving Thursday also adds dynamic weather and time of day.

By Garnett Lee
Burnout Paradise bikes screen

We've been looking forward to the addition of motorcycles to Burnout Paradise from the moment we first heard the idea. Criterion kept us waiting a little bit past the originally intended August timeframe for the release, but today they've announced that it's ready, and coming next week! The free update -- codenamed "Davis" -- will be available Thursday, September 18. Once you've grabbed the update, just head to the nearest Junkyard and the two bikes will be there waiting for you to chose from.

Along with the two new motorcycles this new update brings a whole new look to Paradise City with the addition of both a day-night cycle and dynamic weather. To get you into the swing of things with the bikes they've also cooked up 38 race-against-the-clock events like Burning Ride and Midnight Ride, and 70 more Freeburn Challenges. Of course, we won't blame you if you spend your first night just pulling wheelies and tearing through the streets in the middle of the night. The team also spills some more details on the bikes in the latest episode of their video podcast Crash TV which you can check out on iTunes.

Oh, and they wrap up this latest post with one more tease: info on Trophies for the PS3 version coming next week.

Australia: Animal Crossing City Folk will be called Let's go to the City

posted by malloc
Now here's a bit of a warning to Australian gamers. Animal Crossing City Folk will receive a name change in Australia. It will no longer be called Animal Crossing: City Folk, rather it will be known as Animal Crossing: Let's go to the City.

Animal Crossing City Folk will be launching with a new name when it hits Aussie stores later this year. The Australian Classification board has today rated the game with a G- but it's not called City Folk. Rather, it is named "Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City" which frankly, sounds just a bit disjointed.

Microsoft fires game tester who revealed Xbox 360 defects information

Now Microsoft has gone and FIRED contract worker Robert Delware who revealed insider information which contributed to the Xbox 360 defect exposure story by Takahashi. Halo Wars Will Be A "Kick Ass Game"

Despite Microsoft’s intentions to take Ensemble Studios off the map once “Halo Wars” ships, does a promise to “kick ass” make you feel better?

Activision Blizzard buys FreeStyleGames

Post from Tom Magrino

Publisher signs on UK-based B-Boy developer to create localized Guitar Hero DLC, original rhythm game.

In 2006, Activision made the acquisition of a lifetime. After Guitar Hero became an overnight sensation, Activision picked up the game's publisher, RedOctane, along with the rights to the game, for a cool $100 million. In the years since, that Guitar Hero franchise has gone on to sell more than 22 million units worldwide, generating sales of more than $1 billion in the process.

The publisher would no doubt be thrilled with a fraction of that success coming from its latest acquisition, as today Activision Blizzard announced the purchase of muisic game-oriented studio FreeStyleGames. Fresh off its work on the critically panned rhythm dancing game B-Boy, FreeStyleGames has been charged with developing localized downloadable content for the Guitar Hero franchise and is also at work on a new intellectual property in the rhythm genre.

"Activision Publishing is the undisputed leader in the music-based games and we see tremendous opportunity for continued growth, particularly in Europe," Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith said in a statement. "An important part of our European growth strategy is to work with local developers and provide music content that resonates with the market."

As per the terms of the deal, FreeStyleGames will remain headquartered in Leamington Spa, UK, and Activision Blizzard has signed on the company's current management to long-term contracts. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online To Be Released in North America, Europe

POSTED: Mathew Kumar

MMO gaming community Aeria Games acquired the rights to distribute Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online, a Japanese PC MMO based on the celebrated Japanese RPG franchise, in Europe and North America in four languages: English, French, German and Spanish.

The Shin Megami Tensei series is the intellectual property of Japanese developer and publisher Atlus, and began in 1992 with the release of the original Shin Megami Tensei on the Super Famicom. The MMO, developed by Japanese studio Cave, was originally released at the beginning of last year in Japan. It's set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo where survivors attempt to restore the city by defeating (or forming alliances with) demons and solving puzzles.

In its announcement, Aeria Games highlighted "unique features" of Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online, such as a strategic real-time fighting system, diverse weaponry and devil "partnership", plus private dungeons for players to experience with friends.

"Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online has become a huge success with a large fan following," said an Aeria Games representative. "Aeria Games plans on bringing that success to the European and North American markets as it has done with its titles Last Chaos and Shaiya."

Rumor: Standby, PS3 ISO loader coming with the help of Dark_Alex?

posted by malloc at 02:48 am on 2008-09-11
Saltynuts, the chap that revealed his method to get some selective PS3 ISOs booting on the PS3 has left some rather cryptic messages to us. In a personal PM, he told us "Stand by! http://www.dark-alex.org/ talk soon with good news", previously he has also stated that he has another hack up his sleeve which is waiting to be released. And now in the release thread (page 22) of his hack, he has left a message which similarly states "http://www.dark-alex.org/ standby its coming." We can only assume he's referring to some kind of PS3 ISO loader, and Dark_Alex's website has become something of a mystery recently so perhaps he's been working on this too. PES 2009 includes Champions League News and video

News by Tom Bramwell
Konami has secured the exclusive rights to the UEFA Champions League for Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and has agreed terms with Liverpool and Manchester United to include licensed versions of each team in the game.
The Champions League licence means that the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC versions due out on 17th October will include "all elements and attributes of the competition".
PES 2009 not only features Liverpool, but is the Official Football Videogame of Liverpool FC, and Konami is even producing a specially-packaged version for exclusive use by the club.
"Liverpool FC fans can look forward to the most realistic video game recreation of their team, with the likes of Torres, Gerrard and Carragher recreated with an incredible level of detail," said Konami's Jon Murphy.
PES 2009 promises more detailed likenesses and special animations to match in-game players to their real-life counterparts, and Konami says that will be particularly evident with the licensed Man United team, for which Tevez, Ferdinand, Ronaldo and van der Sar will all have their own graphical sequences.
Both clubs' official kits, crests and other details will also be replicated.
To see how it's all going to look, check out our Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 galleries for Champions League football and Liverpool and Manchester United teams.
PES 2009 is due out on PS3, 360 and PC on 17th October with a Wii version to follow in spring 2009.

COD4 Variety maps going half-price News

News by Rob Purchese
Infinity Ward will be reducing the cost of the Variety Map Pack by half and dishing out double experience to anyone playing Call of Duty 4 online this weekend.
The offer starts tomorrow and ends Sunday on Xbox Live, according to IW community liaison Robert Bowling. PS3 owners can expect the same treatment next weekend.
This staggered approach means Infinity Ward developers can hop online and join fans in battles on both systems. Specifically, the official Xbox 360 Play With Devs time is 4pm PDT on Saturday, which translates to midnight UK time.
The Variety Map Pack now costs 400 MS Points (GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80), and contains four extra areas. Of those, Creek and Chinatown just about justified the original asking price, so half-price sits favourably.
Infinity Ward will also be bringing the Prestige Gamerpic pack back to Xbox Live after a previous limited appearance. Fans complained, apparently.

This morning, we reported that Microsoft has emphasized its commitment to PC gaming despite its announcement that it would be closing Age of Empires creator Ensemble Studios.

Shane Kim, Microsoft VP of interactive entertainment, echoed the sentiment and went on to assure worried gamers about the future of the multi-million-selling Age of Empires strategy series. Help Name Microsoft's New GFW Live Marketplace

When Microsoft announced that Games for Windows Live multiplayer would go free back in July, they also announced they'd be launching a new marketplace client software where game demos, trailers, and updates would be available for download (just like the Xbox Live Marketplace on the Xbox 360). What they haven't been able to figure out yet, apparently, is a cool name to go with it -- which is where you come in.

As the Gamerscore Blog reveals, Microsoft has now turned to the Internet for answers. You can head over to this poll to voice your opinion on six potential names (including "Games for Windows - LIVE Dashboard," "- LIVE Portal," and "- LIVE Guide"), or, if you please, you can enter a name of your own.

So what will you get if Microsoft actually uses the glorious name you suggest? Bupkis. "Of course, we don't guarantee that we'll agree with, like, or use any of the names you choose or provide," reads a disclaimer. "And if you suggest something we love and end up using, no, we won't give you any credit. But we figured it couldn't hurt to ask." You know, at least a please and thank you would be nice.

To get your creative juices flowing, here are a few suggestions of our own: "Games for Windows - LIVE Shoporama;" "Games for Windows - LIVE Quick Mart;" "Games for Windows - LIVE Large Hadron Collider of Merchandise;" "Games for Windows - LIVE Money Hole;" and "Games for Windows - LIVE Not Steam." Any other suggestions, folks?

New Xbox360 games copied to HDD won't load much quicker, but old ones will

The Xbox Product Manager of Germany has revealed that old games such as Project Gotham Racing 3 will feature far reduced load times when installed on the Xbox 360's hard drive. However he noted that new games won't load much quicker if installed on the Xbox 360 hard drive as they have already been optimized.

Xbox Product Manager Germany Boris Schneider-Johne states in a utmost interesting interview with Golem.de that this won't be the case for the majority of 360 games.

We now allow the customer to install games on their hard drive. This is optional, you don't have to do it. But if I do it, these games will load faster because a DVD-drive with seek operation does have load times every now and then. There are prominent examples, for instance: Project Gotham Racing 3, one of the first games for the Xbox 360. There the load times have been very long; those are going to get reduced immensely. Recent games are already optimized; there the gain is relatively small.

Chocobo's Dungeon dated for October News

Square Enix plans to release Wii role-playing adventure Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon across Europe on 31st October.

Here we have Chocobos, the bird creatures from the Final Fantasy universe, dressing up in wizard and knight outfits and collecting the lost memories of a town from various dungeons.

The result was a Metacritic average of 77 per cent from summer US reviews. Conclusions pointed to rather old-fashioned design based around challenge rather than plot, although the childish presentation was lauded for the usual Square Enix polish.

Head over to our Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon gamepage for all the screenshots and videos so far, and look forward to our review closer to release.

Fallout 3 Censorship Goes Global

Bethesda has revealed that following trouble with the ratings board in Australia, all versions of Fallout 3 will be identically censored when the game is released in October.

"We want to make sure folks understand that the Australian version of Fallout 3 is identical to both the UK and North American versions in every way, on every platform," Bethesda VP Pete Hines told Edge.

Fallout 3, a sequel expanding on Black Isle's classic PC RPG series, was initially refused classification in Australia, effectively banning the game from sale. The game was modified so that "the reward and incentive" for in-game drug use was reduced significantly and then given an MA-15+ rating.

Names for real-world drugs have also been removed from the game.

Hines asserted, "An issue was raised concerning references to real world, proscribed drugs in the game, and we subsequently removed those references and replaced them with fictional names."

Microsoft Reportedly Closing Halo Wars Developer Ensemble Studios / [新闻]微软宣判"光环战争"开发商解散

Much of the staff reported to have already been laid off.
A Gamasutra story and separate report on Shacknews both indicate that Microsoft has put in motion a plan to close Ensemble Studios. While we've not received an official comment as yet from Microsoft, the rumored events bear an eerie similarity to what transpired with FASA Studio last year as it approached the release of Shadowrun. Both stories cite multiple independent sources indicating that Ensemble will be shutting down following the release of Halo Wars, currently slated for sometime in early 2009.
According to the sources, Ensemble staff who aren't at work on Halo Wars were laid off this morning. Meanwhile the Halo Wars team has been, "offered incentives to stay on the project until completion." While that may ensure the game's release, Ensemble had a strong tradition for post release support and expansion packs for its Age of Empires games. Without their leadership the longer term future for Halo Wars becomes much more uncertain.
We've reached out to both Microsoft and Ensemble for comment but have yet to receive any word back at this time.

This bundle is a cheaper alternative to buying the game and microphone separately, with a standalone Wii Speak running you $30. Even so, $70 is an exorbitant price for a game that, by all appearances, hasn't evolved much since the game we originally knew as Animal Forest on the N64.
At $70, is the price for engaging in emergent gameplay-like activities -- such as the makeshift fishing tournament showcased at E3 -- now too high? Check out our E3 preview of the game here and let us know what your thoughts are in the comments below.

Forbes: Google as a videogame publisher isn't as crazy as it sounds

Many of you will already know that Google has somewhat entered the gaming sector with Google Lively, an avatar based social interaction site targeted at Second Life players and through the acquisition of in-game ad firm Adscape. While it hasn't really done much with either as of yet, Forbes are speculating that Google as a video game publisher is within the realms of possibility and not as crazy as one might think.

Steve Jobs: iPod touch is best portable for games / 乔布斯:iPod是最棒的掌机

Steve Jobs has claimed that Apple's iPod Touch is not just a great little music and video player but it is also giving the PSP and DS serious food for thought. To quote jobs from earlier on - "Now you can make a pretty good argument that it is the best portable device for playing games on - and a whole new class of games."

The former ad the latter showed off almost cutting edge use of the touchscreen interface of the iPhone. Gameloft has programmed an on-screen d-pad into its game and has included gesture controls, while EA has transposed traditional racing game controls to the interface for its car racer.

Jobs summed up, claiming that Apple's iPod Touch is no longer great for just music and video, but now games too.

"Now you can make a pretty good argument that it is the best portable device for playing games on - and a whole new class of games," he said.

War vets to feature in US army game

The BBC reports that the US military is putting solders who have fought in Afghanistan and Iraq into a video game. The reason for this is that they are trying to put a 'human face' on its fighting operations all across the world. The soldier's are part of a new version of 'America's Army' which is part of their recruitment strategy.

quote:
The soldiers' stories are part of a new version of America's Army, a game which is part of its recruitment strategy.

The US military denies that the project is a way of selling an unpopular war to the American public.

Instead the free game is designed to inspire young people by relating the real-life experiences of the troops.

"The majority of the public is not touched by the war," said Major Jason Amerine, who served in Afghanistan and is one of the nine soldiers appearing in the game.

"It is dangerous to have an army overseas fighting and for a public to become so disconnected that they don't realise that we are not automatons over there. We're real people," he told the BBC News website.

Down with music, up with games at HMV

UK retail chain HMV has stated that videogames will soon overtake music in sales, as it clears more and more space for interactive entertainment on its shelves.

"Within the next 12 to 18 months, it's possible games will be bigger than music for us," suggested chief executive Simon Fox. "Music is in our DNA and we are totally committed to it. But the fact is, the market is moving away from music - so we are giving more space in our stores to games."

I think it has less to do with the fact that the market is moving away from music per se, and more to do with the fact that consumers are finding digital distribution vastly superior to retail. It is the age of the MP3, and so CDs are bound to decline more and more as videogames take over.

Of course, this will also be the fate of videogames in the far-flung future. HMV is wisely moving with the times, but eventually they will not be able to catch up.

Samba de Amigo held back a week

SEGA has told Eurogamer that Samba de Amigo will release a week later than expected on 26th September.

This Wii update of the Dreamcast original made for a musical smile after our hands-on session earlier in the year. There may be no maraca peripherals, but the colourful rhythm-action game packed exactly the sort of friends-will-laugh punch we expected. And we do expect punch.

Excitingly, Samba de Amigo will also offer downloadable songs to shake along to post-launch. "Are You Going to Be My Girl" by Jet has been confirmed to appear, as has stuff by Lou Bega and Bow Wow Wow, the US rapper who shot to pre-pubescent fame a few years back.
